Duties & Responsibilities of the Treasurer

As the Township’s treasury manager, this elected position is responsible for the collection and management of all monies owed to the Township. This position is a member of the Board of Trustees.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Prepares summer & winter tax billings, collects, real, personal property, and special
    assessed taxes, fees and other monies due to the Township. Submits
    funds to appropriate taxing jurisdictions.
  • Performs cash management functions including investment of municipal funds.
  • Investigates and examines various investment options in order to achieve the best possible rate of return.
  • Reconciles all Township accounts.
  • Keeps an account of Township receipts and expenditures.
  • Prepares detailed financial reports for submission to the Board of Trustees, State and Federal regulatory agencies and financial institutions.
  • Responds to requests for information from citizens and financial institutions regarding the tax assessment and collection process.
  • As a member of the Township Board, is involved in the preparation and implementation of the Township’s Budget, policy setting and management of the Township.
  • Supervises the activities of the Deputy Treasurer.
  • Acts as a liaison between the Township, citizens, news media, other governmental agencies and municipal professionals regarding treasury issues.
  • Responds to changing regulations and policies regarding municipal management through professional materials, educational seminars, and information sharing.

The Township collects taxes for Oakland County and its Authorities, Southfield Township, Birmingham and Southfield Schools, Oakland Community College and the State Education System. The tax rate for the Township approved by the Board of Trustees is .60 mills (60 cents for every $1,000. of taxable value).
The Summer Tax is payable July 1st – September 14th without interest or penalty. The Winter Tax is payable December 1st – February 14th without penalty. Please refer to your tax bill for further information.

Currently, under agreement, Under State Law, senior citizens and certain eligible persons may qualify for tax deferment or a poverty exemption. Certain disabled veterans may qualify for an exemption of tax. See the Forms page for more information and fillable forms.

Southfield Township Summer Tax statements should arrive in your mail box on or about July 1. Winter Tax statements should arrive in your mail box on or about December 1.
