ABOUT SOUTHFIELD TOWNSHIP ASSESSING

State law requires that all real and personal property not exempt from taxation in a township must be assessed each year by a certified assessing officer. The assessing process ultimately determines the value of the property used to calculate the property taxes that the township will bill for and collect.

The township has retained the Oakland County Equalization Department to be its certified assessor.

The assessment date for personal and property taxes is December 31 st of each year.

Notices are sent annually, typically in February, indicating any change in the taxable value of the property. Objections to the annual assessment may be made to the Board of Review (identified elsewhere in this website), which meets for at least 4 days in March, and also one day in July and December for limited purposes.

Residents facing financial hardship may be eligible for a reduction in taxes or a deferment to pay taxes. Certain disabled veterans may also qualify for an exemption.
